2 Reasons Smooth Rotors Are Essential For Vehicle Safety

If you are going to replace your brake pads, you may want to take a good look at your rotors as well. Your rotors are an essential component of the brake system on your vehicle.

1. Your Rotors Work In Conjunction With Your Brake Pads

In order for your vehicle to stop, your rotors and your brake pads work together to slow down your vehicle.

When you look through your tires and rims at your brakes, more than likely, the rotor is what catches your attention. The rotor is the large silver disk behind your tire rims, and is one of the largest parts in your brake system. The actual brake pad is located on the side of the rotor. When at rest, the brake pad looks like it takes up about ¼ of the side of your rotor. When your vehicle is in motion, the rotor spins with your tires, and the brake pad remains static unless engaged.

When your press down on your brakes, the brake pad on each of your tires clamps down on the corresponding spinning rotor. The rotor provides the resistance your brake pads need in order to stop your vehicle.

2. Smooth Rotors Equals A Smooth Stop

Your brake pads clamp down on your rotors every time you tap on your brakes. If your brake pads are smooth, you'll be able to stop without any extra turbulence.

However, if your brake pads have become warped and bumpy, you will feel it every time you stop. Instead of smoothly coming to a stop, you will feel your vehicle shake when you apply the brakes.

Any bumps on the surface of your rotors will cause your brake pads to skip when they try to clamp down. Your warped rotors will not be able to provide the same level of resistance as you apply your brakes as smooth rotors, which is why you will feel your vehicle shake as it tries to slow down.

If you are getting your brakes changed, make sure the mechanic inspects your rotors as well as your brake pads. Brake pads tend to wear down more quickly than rotors. Your mechanic should be able to let you know if your rotors need refinished and smoothed down, or if they need to be replaced.

If your rotors do not need replaced at the same time as your brake pads, be sure to get an estimate of how many more miles your rotors may have on them. You can set up an appointment for an estimate by calling a local mechanic, such as Fantastik Auto Repair, and asking if they do brake work. That way, you can take your vehicle in for a check-up when you reach that mileage. Remember, smooth rotors are essential for a smooth ride.
